Props Research

The props we decided to use in our opening two minutes were:
  • Torch- This will be used when we are filming during the dusk so the view is very limited. As it is during the dark it will make the atmosphere more scary and increase the tension. Also as the dusk connotes mystery it makes the viewer apprehensive as to what is going to happen next.
  • Knife- A knife is a common used prop in horror films as it illustrates that some sort of danger will be happening. The antagonist will have the knife hidden and there will be multiple shots focusing on the knife usage.
  • Fake blood- This will be used during the shot where the antagonist captures the victim, Hannah. We decided to include the use of fake blood as it makes it much more realistic and scarier. When filming we will take great care when using the knife and the fake blood will be used just to add effect.
  • Scarf- The scarf will be worn by Hannah and then found by the mother all covered in blood. This will be the indicator that Hannah is hurt although the mother does not know this until she discovers the scarf.
Props are a very important part of horror films because during the filming of them no one can obviously be hurt so the director relies on props to create the desired effect. The props make the films more realistic and build the tension, without the use of props horror films would not be scary. When doing our questionnaire a large majority of people said they find knifes scary in horrors as they are household objects that anyone could get hold of, this is the reason we decided to use a knife as the weapon in our opening.
